How to Safely Melt Solidified Oils

When your oil or butter has firmed up in its jug, avoid microwaves or direct heat. Slow, even warming is key to preserving quality.

What You’ll Need:

  • Large pan
  • Washcloth
  • Brick (or similar heat-safe weight)
  • Water
  • Stove top

Instructions:

1. Protect the pan.
Place a washcloth on the inside bottom of your pan. This prevents scratches and creates a buffer between the pan and the brick.

2. Add the brick.
Set a brick on top of the washcloth. This helps elevate the container so it doesn’t sit directly on the hot pan surface.

3. Position the jug.
Place your container of solidified oil on top of the brick. Keeping the jug off the direct heat prevents overheating or scorching.

4. Add water.
Fill the pan with enough water to gently heat the container — but do not submerge the cap or allow water inside the jug.

5. Apply medium heat.
Place the pan on your stovetop over medium heat. Allow the water to warm gradually until the product inside the container melts completely.

This process creates a gentle water bath effect, warming your oil evenly without exposing it to harsh direct heat. It helps maintain product integrity, texture, and performance — which is especially important when you’re formulating soaps, candles, or skincare.

  • Do not leave unattended.
  • Avoid high heat — patience protects quality.
  • Gently swirl (with the cap secured) once partially melted to help distribute warmth evenly.
  • Don't shake jugs. This will create air bubbles which accelerates oxidation and raises peroxide value which reduces shelf life.
  • Once you’ve dispensed the amount needed for your formula, gently squeeze the jug until the oil rises to the top, then secure the cap while the container remains slightly compressed. This helps remove excess air from the headspace, keeping your oil fresher for longer.
