Making Soap with NBC Chicago Today: A Behind-the-Scenes Look

In a recent episode of NBC Chicago Today, Quinn Taylor from Soap Junkii and Ben Caffrey from Soaper's Choice joined forces to demonstrate the fascinating process of soap making. The studio was filled with delightful aromas as they walked viewers through the steps of creating high-quality soap using premium ingredients from Soaper's Choice.

The Soap Making Process

Ben Caffrey kicked off the segment by introducing the key ingredients used in their soap making process: cocoa butter, shea butter, olive oil, and coconut oil. These ingredients are known for their moisturizing properties, leaving the skin feeling soft and nourished. Quinn Taylor, who has been making soap since 2016, explained that the process involves mixing water with these oils to create the soap base.

Quinn demonstrated the next step by adding oats to the pre-mixed bowl of shea butter, olive oil, coconut oil, and castor oil.

"The oats are great for sensitive skin," Quinn noted, highlighting the benefits of this natural exfoliant.

The final touch was adding a fragrance oil, which not only enhances the soap's scent but also provides a soothing experience. The chosen fragrance for this demonstration was "oats and honey," a popular choice for its comforting aroma.

The Passion Behind Soap Making

Quinn shared a personal story about how their passion for soap making began.

"I started making soap for my daughter years ago, and then I began to make it for everyone else," Quinn said.

This passion has grown into a successful business, thanks in part to the high-quality oils provided by Soaper's Choice.

"They're local, so I'm able to go pick up my items. Their oils are very high quality, and all these oils go into your other products as well," Quinn added.

The Curing Process

One of the most surprising aspects of soap making is the curing process. After pouring the soap mixture into molds, it takes four to six weeks to cure. This curing time allows the soap to harden and develop its final texture and properties.

"It's like cheese," Ben joked, explaining that the soap needs time to set properly before it's ready for use.

Giving Back to the Community

Ben Caffrey also spoke about the importance of supporting local businesses and giving back to the community.

"It's an honor to work with businesses like Quinn's Soap Junkie. They're part of the community, we're part of the community, and we want to give back. They've helped us succeed, and we want to help them as well," Ben said.

This collaboration between two Chicago-based businesses exemplifies the spirit of community and mutual support.
